CCF: We are sitting down today with a very familiar face in Croatian cricket over the last few years, Mr. Abhishek Awasthi, the Zagreb Warriors C.C. vice president. Tell us a little bit about yourself, Abhi.
Abhishek: Thank you for having me. I’m a passionate advocate for cricket development in Croatia, and I’ve been actively involved in the cricket community for several years. Alongside my role as vice president of Zagreb Warriors Cricket Club, I’m also a proud member of the Zagreb Assassins, where I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the growth of cricket in our country firsthand.
CCF: How did the idea of forming the Zagreb Warriors cricket club come about, and what inspired you to take on the role of captain and vice-president?
Abhishek: The idea for Zagreb Warriors sprung from a bunch of cricket fanatics in Zagreb itching to play the sport they loved. As for my roles, well, someone had to lead the charge, and I figured why not me? Plus, who doesn’t love wearing the captain’s hat now and then?
CCF: Could you share some insights into the challenges faced by the Zagreb Warriors in their first year of participating in the European Cricket Series (ECS)?
Abhishek: Oh, where do I start? It was like being thrown into the deep end of the pool without knowing how to swim! But hey, we survived, learned a ton, and even though we lost every match, we had a blast doing it.
CCF: How has the Zagreb Warriors cricket club evolved since its inception, and what improvements do you see in the team’s performance this year?
Abhishek: We’ve come a long way from our humble beginnings. This year, we’re like a well-oiled cricket machine, ready to take on whatever the ECS throws at us. Expect some fireworks on the field!

CCF: As the captain of the Zagreb Warriors, what strategies do you employ to motivate and unite your team, especially considering the diverse backgrounds and skill levels of the players?
Abhishek: We believe in playing the best brand of cricket. Competitive but keeping the spirit of the game at the forefront of how we present ourselves. Its not about winning at all cost. It’s all about keeping the vibe positive, the banter flowing, and reminding everyone that we’re in this together. Oh, and pizza parties after practice never hurt anyone’s morale!
CCF: Can you tell us about your involvement in grooming young cricket talent in Croatia through the Croatian Cricket Federation’s program for kids under 14?
Abhishek: It’s like being a cricketing Pied Piper, except instead of rats, I’ve got a bunch of enthusiastic kids following me around with bats and balls. We’re planting the cricket seed early, nurturing talent, and having a blast doing it.
CCF: You take pride in your cricket appearance and some have labeled you as the cricket fashion guru. Is there any truth in that?
Abhishek: laughs Well, I do believe in presenting oneself professionally on and off the field. While I wouldn’t claim the title of “fashion guru,” I do take pride in ensuring that our team’s appearance reflects our commitment to the sport and our club. It’s all about representing ourselves with dignity and respect for the game.

CCF: What are your aspirations for the future of cricket in Croatia, particularly in Zagreb, and how do you plan to contribute to its growth?
Abhishek: World domination, one cricket pitch at a time! But seriously, I want to see cricket become as popular as football here. And hey, if I have to moonlight as a cricket evangelist to make it happen, so be it!
CCF: Croatia is well-known for its passion for football. How do you plan to leverage this enthusiasm for football to encourage more kids to take up cricket?
Abhishek: Football undoubtedly holds a special place in Croatian culture, and we can harness this passion to introduce more kids to the joys of cricket. One approach is to draw parallels between the two sports, highlighting the similarities in skills such as hand-eye coordination, teamwork, and strategic thinking. We can organize friendly cricket matches or events that incorporate elements of football, making the transition to cricket more seamless and enjoyable for young athletes. Additionally, collaborating with local football clubs and coaches to introduce cricket as a complementary sport or offseason activity can help expand our reach and attract new participants. By tapping into Croatia’s love for football, we can create unique opportunities for kids to explore cricket and ultimately enrich their sporting experiences.
CCF: How do you balance your roles as a mechanical engineer, a patent attorney, and your commitments to the Zagreb Warriors cricket club and the Croatian Cricket Federation?
Abhishek: Beer. Lots and lots of Beer. And maybe the occasional power nap. But seriously, balancing multiple roles can be challenging, but I’m fortunate to have a supportive team at work and in the cricket community. I prioritize my time effectively, delegate tasks when necessary, and ensure clear communication with all stakeholders. Additionally, my passion for cricket and commitment to its growth serve as a driving force that motivates me to manage my responsibilities efficiently.

CCF: How do you see the future of cricket evolving in Croatia, and what role do you envision the Zagreb Warriors playing in its development?
Abhishek: Cricket in Croatia is like a sleeping giant just waiting to be awakened. And the Zagreb Warriors? Well, we’re the alarm clock, ready to shake things up, spread the cricket fever, and make some noise!
CCF: How do you see the future development of Croatian cricket, and will you be a part of it, and if so, in which way?
Abhishek: The future of Croatian cricket is bright, and I’m committed to playing an active role in its development. I’m currently pursuing Level 1 coaching certification to enhance my coaching abilities and contribute to nurturing young talent through initiatives like the Croatian Cricket Federation’s junior program. Additionally, I’m proud to support my son’s passion for cricket and look forward to sharing the joys of the sport with him. On a broader scale, I’m excited about the recent debut of the Croatian women’s cricket team, and I’m eager to support and encourage their growth as they pave the way for future generations of female cricketers in our country. Whether it’s through coaching, mentoring, or administrative efforts, I’ll continue to lend my expertise and enthusiasm to the advancement of Croatian cricket.
CCF: Tell us a bit more about your personal and club goals for this season.
Abhishek: Personally, I aim to continue contributing to the growth of cricket in Croatia, both as a player and as an administrator. As for Zagreb Warriors Cricket Club, our goals for this season are twofold: first, to build on the progress we made last year and strive for improved performance in tournaments like the European Cricket Series; and second, to further strengthen our grassroots initiatives and youth development programs, laying a solid foundation for the future of cricket in our country.

CCF: What was your cricketing career highlight thus far?
Abhishek: Representing Croatian National Cricket team. It was like a dream come true.
CCF: Who is your favorite cricket player?
Abhishek: Growing up, I’ve always admired the legendary Sachin Tendulkar for his skill, dedication, and humility both on and off the field. His record-breaking career and commitment to the game have been an inspiration to countless cricketers, including myself.
CCF: What is your favorite Croatian dish?
Abhishek: Pasticada, hands down. Slow-cooked beef stew that’s as comforting as a well-played cover drive on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
